Residency Unlimited

Residency Unlimited is an artist residency program on Governors Island. The organization provides long-form residencies with studio visits, peer feedback, and access to distributed workspaces across New York City.

Residency Unlimited connects artists and curators to New York's art world through long-form residencies that move beyond studio space to become a learning ecosystem. Founded in 2009, the organization operates from a former church in Carroll Gardens and has extended its reach to Governors Island seasonally, offering individualized studio visits with established professionals, critical feedback on work-in-progress, and access to distributed workspaces across the city. The core conviction is straightforward: artists need more than a desk. They need proximity to peers working at different scales and disciplines, sustained engagement with curators and mentors, and institutional backing to strengthen what they're already making. In 2025 alone, RU facilitated over 500 studio meetings. The work pursues a particular philosophy about artistic development—that residencies succeed when they acknowledge where an artist actually is in their practice and build around that, rather than imposing a fixed template.
