Residency Unlimited has two things going within 24 hours of each other this week: a Brooklyn opening Friday and a Governors Island workshop Saturday. I'd also make time for ISCP's open house Wednesday if you've never seen the inside of that building.

ISCP opens its East Williamsburg factory building for an evening of studio visits with its current international cohort of artists and curators in residence. It's a rare chance to see inside 35 working studios and talk to the residents directly, not just look at finished work on a wall.

Carol Priego, Sean Wang, Juan Miguel Marin, and Matthew Logan open a group show built around the island as both place and metaphor. Priego traces the history of a vanished South Bronx island, once home to the region's last native prickly pear habitat, through its transformation into the Freedomland amusement park and later Co-op City. Marin's sound installation is built from field recordings tracing the island's old perimeter.

Van Herpen steps into her own Alchemical Atelier installation this weekend to build a new look in real time, open to visitors who want to watch the process instead of just the finished garment. She calls her method "craftolution" - hand embroidery next to 3D printing, laser-cutting next to pleating by hand.

Beasley's fifth solo show at Casey Kaplan marks his first turn to painting on canvas, a real departure for an artist known for resin-cast assemblages of cotton and raw material. It's in Chelsea, and it closes this week.
Juan Miguel Marin is a Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist whose work turns memory into sound, drawing, and performance. He spent years in advertising and graphic design before quitting for good, a shift set off by artist Shantell Martin inviting him into a free-form drawing session that became his daily practice. He won BRIC's inaugural ArtFP Award for Under the Influence, a series of large-scale automatic drawings made while immersed in his own field-recorded soundscapes, and he still drums for the indie-dance band LEGS on the side. His practice reads as one long meditation on being an immigrant and searching for home within himself. His sound piece is part of this week's Island Boundaries, entry 4 above.
