Petra Janda

Petra Janda is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She creates installations and performances using organic materials that invite participants to interact with them, exploring relationships between people and environmental concerns.

Petra Janda works across sculpture, intermedia, and performance, grounded in the relations between people and environmental issues. Based in Prague, she founded Artbiom.cz, a platform archiving ecological artistic practice, and established the Ecocell at the Academy of Fine Arts. In her installations she uses often agricultural, organic materials in interaction with real bodies, inviting them to action, so that they almost merge into one. She creates a meeting space rather than closed art forms. Janda relates to ecology through topics of conservation or motherhood, which she also views as a mode of interpersonal communication, seeking ecologically friendly approaches to creation and materials in sculpture through circular economy principles and by revisiting the legacy of old crafts and traditions. She is the laureate of the 2023 Jindřich Chalupecký Award.
