Nowadays is a nightclub and outdoor venue in Ridgewood, Queens. Founded in 2015 by DJs Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter as a home for their long-running Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday parties, it operates a 5,000-square-foot indoor room alongside its original dirt lot.
Nowadays started as a seasonal outdoor bar on an ex-industrial lot just inside Ridgewood, Queens: rough dirt backyard, a few picnic tables, a food truck, and a sound system that was already better than it needed to be. DJs Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter opened it in 2015 as a physical home for their Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday parties, which had been running since 2009 in backyards and improvised spaces around Brooklyn. By 2017 they'd taken the adjacent warehouse, built out a 5,000-square-foot indoor room, and the full project snapped into focus: techno and house on Friday and Saturday nights, Mister Sunday afternoon dancing in the sunshine, Nonstop 24-hour sets running straight through the weekend, and Planetarium: a deep-listening session where guests bring pillows and blankets, lie on the floor, and say nothing. The question Nowadays keeps returning to is what a dance space owes its community beyond the dancefloor.
