Gerald Simpson, known as A Guy Called Gerald, is a British record producer and musician. He produces sounds on the fly with MIDI controllers and mixers, creating sounds live rather than playing pre-recorded tracks. His 1988 hit 'Voodoo Ray' became a touchstone of Manchester's acid house scene and reached No. 12 in the UK charts. In 1991 he started Juice Box Records, releasing 12" singles that became the seeds of jungle and drum and bass, with early releases identified as genre-defining. He describes his approach as having no particular production style: "I start with sounds and sculpt and shape them. I try to stay away from things that have been or are popular". His recent work shifts toward vocal-driven, melodic sound, with the "turn away from cold, secret technology to the warmth of the human voice".
