UrbanGlass

UrbanGlass is a glass art studio in Brooklyn. Founded in 1977, the organization has offered public classes and studio access for nearly fifty years, operating from the third floor of the historic Strand Theatre since 1991.

UrbanGlass was founded in 1977 by three recent art school graduates. Erik Erikson, Richard Yelle, and Joe Upham. Who wanted to continue their experiments in glass. The organization moved to Brooklyn in 1991 and took its current name, occupying the third floor of the historic Strand Theatre. What animates the studio now isn't novelty but access—the Workshop featured an education program providing classes for working artists and the general public to expand their understanding of glass, and that dual commitment to studio practice and public learning has held steady for nearly fifty years. The Visiting Artists Fellowship Program expanded significantly to serve diverse artists, from Tauba Auerbach to Suzanne McClelland, while designers like Lindsey Adelman and Misha Kahn have relied on the studio to realize new projects in glass. In addition to providing studio space for artists already versed in the material, the Workshop featured an education program. A premise that remains central. UrbanGlass fosters experimentation and advances the use and critical understanding of glass as a creative medium.
