CARVALHO is staging a new work by the choreographer Andrew Skeels this week, danced by Lloyd Knight and Jacquelin Harris inside a landscape installation. If you'd rather make something with your own hands, UrbanGlass and Tiny Arts Supply both have workshops running Saturday, mosaic glass and color film developing. I like that both are open to total beginners. I'd also point you toward CJ Hendry's Pastel, opening this week at Salon 94 Design in Manhattan, a hands-on installation built from thousands of colored beads.

  1. 1. Andrew Skeels' Meanwhile at CARVALHO

Skeels choreographs a new work built around a landscape installation, performed by Lloyd Knight and Jacquelin Harris. The show is free, but it requires an RSVP. I'd go for the installation alone.

Deluge & Plural Artist Management books three electronic acts into the Sound Room for one night: Bobby Beethoven, Kumi James of BAE BAE, and Kelman Duran.

  3. 3. Ana Stavarache's One Day Mosaics at UrbanGlass

Ana Stavarache teaches a one-day class in mosaic glass design. Students cut precut glass, then collage it onto a wooden board to take home. It's on my list this week.

    Sat Aug 8
  4. 4. Matana Roberts' Cinder Sessions at The Stone

The Stone hosts a world premiere over four nights running. Roberts leads a core ensemble of Chris Ryan Williams on trumpet, Lester St. Louis on cello, Adi Meyerson on bass, and Ryan Sawyer on drums. A different guest joins each night.

    Wed Aug 5–Sat Aug 8, 8:30p
  5. 5. Community Church of New York's Community Dinner at The People's Forum

Community Church of New York builds a shared meal around what they call revolutionary love. It's open to anyone who wants to break bread and talk. I like that it asks nothing of you beyond showing up.

    Thu Aug 6, 6–8p
  6. 6. Stefan Sens' C-41 Color Film Developing Workshop at Tiny Arts Supply

Stefan Sens teaches a beginner-friendly class in developing color film at home, no darkroom required. He walks through the process start to finish, chemistry and equipment included. Same Saturday as the mosaic glass workshop at UrbanGlass, if you want to make a full day of making.

    Sat Aug 8, 12–2p
  7. 7. Jawani 4eva at Elsewhere

The Jawani 4eva party series takes over Elsewhere's rooftop, headlined by Aku with Arjxn, Eshie, jakari wing, and Rajuju.

    Sat Aug 8, 4p
  8. 8. Handmade Books from Scrap Paper at Brooklyn Creative Reuse

Turn junk mail and scrap paper into a handmade book. Brooklyn Creative Reuse brings all the materials, no bookbinding experience needed.

    Sat Aug 8, 6–9p
CJ Hendry at Salon 94 Design

CJ Hendry fills the gallery with a massive pit of pastel-colored beads shaped like flowers, smiley faces, basketballs, spaceships, pills, and tiny unicorns. Visitors dig through to string their own bracelet, necklace, or charm to take home. I'm looking forward to building my own bracelet.

See you out there,
