CARVALHO is a gallery in East Williamsburg operating from a renovated warehouse where it programs exhibitions exploring the relationship between visual art, craft, and performance.
CARVALHO operates out of a renovated warehouse on Waterbury Street in East Williamsburg, where the industrial scale of the space is part of the proposition. Founded in 2019 by Jennifer Carvalho and Se Yoon Park (whose backgrounds run through classical ballet, the Whitney, MoMA PS1, and architectural sculpture) the gallery has built a program around the friction between visual art, craft, and performance. The question it keeps asking is whether a medium is a tool or a destination; most of what shows here insists it's the former. Since doubling its footprint in late 2023, a dedicated second gallery hosts the commissioned performance series that has become the gallery's most visible through-line: live dance staged inside textile installations, choreography written for a specific room, the art object as scene.
