Alicja Biała is an artist in Brooklyn, NY. She creates etched brass panels and sculptural works exploring Slavic symbols, hyperaccumulator plants, and the environmental impact of human activity.
Biała draws from Slavic and folk symbols, blending the historical past with the political and personal realities of contemporary life. Working in etched brass, cast flora, and suspended root systems, she explores the intersections of nature, history, and political agency through painterly, sculptural, and chemical processes. Her recent projects address the anxiety associated with human domination over the natural environment. In works like Beneath the Soft Ground, Hard Ground, a monumental cycle of twelve brass panels depicting hyperaccumulator plants that cleanse soil and water of heavy metals, and curtains made from copper and zinc ores subjected to acidic water, etching away the unprotected fragments while leaving life-size representations of Adam and Eve, she collapses the distance between mythology and ecological fact.
