Diana Orving is a textile and mixed-media artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Self-taught and influenced by her mother's textile practice in Stockholm, she creates sculptures and paintings that treat fabric forms as organic, living entities with flowing seams resembling veins or branches.
Diana Orving is self-taught, having grown up in Stockholm surrounded by her mother's textiles, sewing machines, and looms. Her practice is a dynamic exchange between textile sculptures, paintings, and costumes, exploring the relationship between the tactile and visual, and the interplay between body and space. She uses form and movement to express and understand states of mind, relationships, mental and physical processes. Orving approaches her sculptures as organic beings with their own will—the flowing seams resemble blood veins or tree branches, never static and ever-expanding. She imagines fashion learning from architecture's structural thinking and architecture from fashion's intimacy, resulting in softer, more responsive systems.
