Casey Kaplan is a contemporary art gallery in Chelsea. Founded in 1995, the gallery introduced New York audiences to now-canonical artists including Jason Dodge, Jonathan Monk, and Simon Starling through their first solo exhibitions.
Casey Kaplan opened in 1995 in a 500-square-foot room in a SoHo cast iron loft, and has spent three decades following where the work takes it. Kaplan started with connections to studio assistants and young artists discovered in alternative spaces and art schools, building a roster that would define contemporary practice. The gallery hosted the first New York solo exhibitions of Jason Dodge, Jonathan Monk, and Simon Starling—artists now canonical. "I'm doubling down on New York, my home," Kaplan has said. "I'm not interested in having a gallery somewhere else. I am a big believer in focusing, and I can focus by not being in London and Paris and Milan and Los Angeles." The gallery has hosted over 200 exhibitions, crossing geography, generations, and artistic disciplines. Rather than chasing market trends across continents, Casey Kaplan attends to what artists actually need: time, space, and the long commitment of a gallery that won't abandon them the moment the market shifts.
