The Brooklyn Army Terminal is a 95-acre industrial complex where the logistics of the past shape the possibilities of the present. Built by Cass Gilbert in 1918-19 as a U.S. Army Supply Base, its massive reinforced-concrete warehouse buildings and monumental atrium now host close to 100 visual artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media, alongside manufacturers, food makers, and metalworkers. Chashama, a nonprofit that activates vacant real estate for artists, operates studios here at subsidized rates. At ground level, the Terminal hosts waterfront cultural programming: outdoor film screenings, performances, and seasonal celebrations that draw Sunset Park residents into dialogue with the working studios above. The Terminal sits at an ongoing negotiation between industrial heritage and contemporary practice, between private studio work and public assembly.
