Shirley Fiterman Art Center is a gallery in Tribeca housed at Borough of Manhattan Community College. It organizes contemporary art exhibitions and cultural programming that engage the BMCC and Lower Manhattan communities while documenting the artistic and historic legacies of the neighborhood.
The Shirley Fiterman Art Center at Borough of Manhattan Community College is dedicated to organizing exhibitions of contemporary art and cultural programming through which it seeks to promote and enrich the educational mission of BMCC and serve as a resource for the BMCC and Lower Manhattan communities. The center believes in the fundamental role of education and advocacy through art and in the preservation of the artistic and historic legacies of Tribeca and Lower Manhattan. These exhibitions are intended to provide diverse gallery programs that allow a place to engage with contemporary art and investigate a deeper understanding of its role in society at a venue that is free of charge and open to the public. Housed in a 4,000-square-foot exhibition space in the rebuilt Fiterman Hall, designed by Pei Cobb & Partners, which opened in 2012, the center approaches art-making as inseparable from questions of identity, equity, and social urgency.
