SENTIENT is a furniture studio at 276 Greenpoint Avenue in Brooklyn specializing in American hardwood furniture made from air-dried raw slabs.
Wood arrives at 276 Greenpoint Avenue as raw slab (American black walnut, spalted maple, cherry, oak) air-dried for up to eighteen months before a hand touches it. That patience is the point. Founded in 2012 by Nersi Nasseri and Ali Yavari, SENTIENT runs design, woodworking, metal fabrication, upholstery, and finishing under one roof, with a team of twenty-five to thirty craftspeople. The collection ranges from live-edge dining tables and the sculptural Sapience Chair series to the fully upholstered Baashe curved sectional and the Wave Chaise Lounge, which took Best Furniture and Best of Show at ICFF 2024. Nasseri's recurring question: what does furniture feel like when nothing is hidden: not the grain, not the joint, not the hand that made it?
Fun Stuff covers what's worth showing up for in Williamsburg every week, including programming at SENTIENT. Free.
