Nebula Neon is a custom neon fabrication studio in Brooklyn founded in 2020 by James Akers and Ali Feeney. They create neon sculptures that incorporate sound circuits and modified electrical components to produce noise, video, and interactive effects for art, retail, film, and architectural clients.
James Akers and Ali Feeney started Nebula Neon in 2020, a custom neon fabrication shop that works across art, retail, film, architectural lighting, and restaurants. Akers creates dense, frenetically active sculptures incorporating neon and sound circuits—using neon for its eye-grabbing glow in three-dimensional, sculptural form—while adding modified consumer electrical circuits to make sculptures produce noise, play video, or scan objects. Outside the glass studio, he's been programming web-server sculptures, drawn to ideas of a decentralized internet made for and by its users, and themes of celebration and excess, digital surveillance and influence, consumerism, bliss and rebellious subversion. He employs a messy approach when designing and assembling sculptures, embracing a show your work philosophy. The work keeps returning to the collision between handmade craft and mass-produced systems.
