Monumental Labs

Monumental Labs is a stone carving studio in Greenpoint. Founded in 2022, the studio uses robots to rough-shape stone and employs carvers for fine detail work on restoration projects and new commissions.

Monumental Labs splits the work: robots rough-shape stone in hours, humans carve the fine details. Founded by Micah Springut in 2022, the studio leverages automation and machine learning to revive stone carving. In two years, they've worked on restoration of The Frick, Carnegie Hall, and The Villard Houses, plus new buildings for universities and architects, and commissions for artists and collectors. The Greenpoint factory will employ 25 to 30 carvers, training new craftspeople from sculpture schools like the New York Academy of Art and Grand Central Atelier. Springut argues for returning to an era when ornamental stone adorned building facades before post-war modernism shifted toward glass boxes.
