Rema is one of the most globally recognized names in contemporary Afrobeats, credited with pushing the genre's sound toward what he calls 'Afrorave.'
Rema is the stage name of Divine Ikubor, a Nigerian singer born in Benin City in 2000 who broke through in 2019 with 'Dumebi' and signed to D'Prince's label, Jonzing World, before he turned nineteen. In 2021 he coined 'Afrorave,' a mix of Afrobeats with Arabian and Indian influences, as the frame for his 2022 debut album, Rave & Roses. Its deluxe reissue carried 'Calm Down,' his collaboration with Selena Gomez, onto the global charts. Fun Stuff Williamsburg encountered him at a remove: 99 Scott's Rema Land was a release party built around his single 'Tea,' with local DJs standing in for an artist who wasn't in the room.
Fun Stuff covers what's worth showing up for in Williamsburg every week, including artists like Rema. Free.
