Raven Chacon

Raven Chacon is a musician in Brooklyn, NY. He records soundscapes from Diné lands, amplifies them to distortion to reveal hidden patterns, then integrates those recordings into chamber works, operas, and site-specific installations.

Raven Chacon listens to what the land says before he composes. As a Diné musician, he records soundscapes in remote locations—Window Rock, Canyon de Chelly, the Sandia Mountains—then amplifies them to distortion, coaxing out patterns invisible at normal volume. This method of paying attention shapes everything: chamber works scored for graphic notation, site-specific operas, noise performances across city blocks, installations in museum galleries. Working from Diné worldviews alongside Western classical forms, Chacon makes pieces that hold the weight of history in their materials. A work for pipe organ and ensemble won the Pulitzer Prize in 2022 by examining what it means to gather in spaces built on stolen land. Score-based composition, for him, is a form of generosity—opening space for performers, audiences, and whatever sounds the place itself might offer.

Never miss a Raven Chacon performance.
