Rainer Scheichelbauer is a type designer and educator in Brooklyn, NY. He founded Schriftlabor foundry and teaches variable font design while advocating for accessibility in typography.
Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer was born in Vienna, and studied photography, philosophy and Dutch. For the past decade, he has split his energy between designing typefaces and explaining how to design them. Since joining the Glyphs team in 2012 and writing tutorials and the handbook, in 2014 he started the foundry Schriftlabor. His animating concern is accessibility: fonts are not merely beautiful hobbies or simple tools, but can really make a difference. He teaches variable fonts—the format that lets one typeface flex across weights and widths—not as a technical exercise but as a practice rooted in making typography available to languages and communities that commercial foundries have overlooked. When he's not in Vienna running Schriftlabor, he's teaching someone else how to make fonts work harder.
