Nate Wooley is a trumpet player and composer based in Brooklyn, NY. He develops compositional systems using the International Phonetic Alphabet as a structural tool, mapping sound production across physical parameters of the mouth and throat.
Nate Wooley works as a trumpet player, improviser, composer, and writer dedicated to the American tradition of vibrantly shaggy experimentalism. His practice spans three distinct but overlapping terrains. For his Syllables series, Wooley constructed a new compositional language based on adjusting the physical parameters of how one makes sound, using the International Phonetic Alphabet as a tone-row to create structures on the position of the teeth, tongue, throat and nasal cavity. Much of his composition is collaborative, such as his ecstatic song cycle, Seven Storey Mountain and the ever-evolving Mutual Aid Music compositional ecosystem. Wooley has built two of the most important independent platforms in contemporary creative music: Pleasure of the Text Records, his artist-run label, and Sound American, the journal and community space he founded to document and contextualize the broader field of improvised and experimental music.
