Matthew Lutz-Kinoy

Matthew Lutz-Kinoy is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. He creates large-scale paintings as backdrops for live performances that explore the relationship between bodies, narrative, and specific physical spaces.

Matthew Lutz-Kinoy builds performance at the core of his practice, informed by histories of queer and collaborative work as well as theater and choreography. His live work explores narratives created between individuals and social spaces. He makes large-scale paintings as backdrops for performances, thinking through issues of scale and narrative, and prefers to work on-site where all materials—clay, canvas, bodies—are understood as located in a specific place. His exhibitions function as total environments with silhouetted bodies and ornamental motifs drawn from art history, from Expressionism to Rococo, foregrounding pleasure, color, intimacy and motion. He works with the interactions between people, materials, histories, and ideas.
