Bel Falleiros is a Brazilian artist whose practice focuses on place and belonging. Starting in her hometown of São Paulo, she has worked to understand how contemporary constructed landscapes (mis)represent the diverse layers of presence that constitute a place and how this affects its inhabitants. Her ceramic sculptures and paintings often adopt forms reminiscent of ripples and concentric circles. Rounded forms appear in her Navels series, exploring sacred geologic and human-made landforms; the Earth's Navel manifests as a recurring element serving as a reminder of art's enmeshment in ecological systems and sacred places. Through her Soil Sessions program, she creates spaces for grounding and nurturing using scents from Amazonian plants, ceramic works, and foraged materials to guide multisensory meditations that activate the body through direct engagement with soil, breath, sound, and image. She believes that art felt with the whole body is a reminder of intimate relationships with place and nature; every place and experience is an integral piece of a collective library of stories to be woven into a greater whole. To be closer to the land is to remember each one of us is part and participant of a broader organism.
