Asher Liftin is an artist based in Brooklyn. He creates paintings by layering acrylic ink and colored dots over gray grounds, producing works that read as photographic images from a distance but reveal hand-drawn grids and markings up close.
Asher Liftin investigates fundamental conditions of vision and visibility, translating his own photographs refracted through a glass eye into meticulously hand-crafted renderings on canvas and paper. He begins paintings by laying down a medium-gray ground, then deposits layers of acrylic ink, overlaying successive lines into grids before breaking them down into multicolored dots. At a distance his paintings lock into photographic clarity; at close range they unravel into luminous networks of colored markings that attest to their own making. With degrees in both Art and Cognitive Science from Yale (2021), Liftin's practice is rooted in the intersection between image-making and image-processing. The work stages a conversation between how eyes and brains construct meaning from fragments, and how paint can reveal that invisible process.
